Well, I've sent off the first mix in our little music club here, hopefully it will reach you all soon.
I enjoy making mix tapes, and though I'm no expert on it, I really try to make each mix I make tell a story of some sort. I had the idea that became this mix during this summer....and I never got around to putting it together until now, the idea changed quite a bit from its first inception, but I wont say anymore until everyone has a chance to discuss it, I'd like everyone to form their own opinions.
Like I said I'm not an expert on making mixes, but I do have my own set of rules and procedures for making one. I guess thats one of the exciting things about this club to me, I look forward to everyone developing their own rules, their own style, to making a mix, and seeing those ideas play out in the final product.
One thing I prefer people do when I make them a mix is to not look at the "track list" until they've listened to the mix through at least once. I feel like part of the excitement of getting a mix from someone is not knowing what's coming next. Maybe there will be some artists you recognize, maybe there will be some songs you've heard before but never knew who performed them....thats part of the fun for me. But that's just the way I prefer people to listen to a mix, if you like looking at the track listing before hand, then so be it.
Anyway, look for the september mix in the mail and post your thoughts here. I hope you all can find something about it that you enjoy, but be honest. I look forward to hearing your comments.
Take care,
Joey

As usual, i like your mix a lot. Although you realize my making a 'concept' mix you might have raised the bar impossibly high. I still can't figure out how I am going to make the transition from a plunky folkways recording of Doc Watson to a face kicking Mastodon track...
Glad you dig it. I don't tend to do to many theme mixes, I'd just wanted to do a whole mix about "drowning" for a while, but I didnt have enough songs...so I expanded it to fire and water. I got together a bunch of songs and cut the stuff that didnt work. Theres a lot of ways to go about it I suppose, i think the way the songs flow on the mix is more important than a theme anyway....I just got the idea and ran with it.
I greatly enjoyed the concept and the accompanying artwork/track guide. To second grizzles, I'm also a bit worried about having to compete at this level of production. Personally I'm having trouble getting from Biggie's "Who the fuck is this" to Gillian Welch.
In the spirit of objectivity, I would have to say that my only complaint is that there were no songs that I was immediately in love with (i.e. wanted to play on repeat over and over again). Then again maybe I need to give it time; I am becoming partial to the Waterbugs and the second Pixies song.
Super mixo!
ok, this is a big deal....first post on a blog. whew hoo!
so at first, i must admit joey, i was not a huge fan of the cd. i think i listened to it on a bad day...so yea. but i tried again the other day, and fell in love. i think the water side is a perfect mix to listen to at the end of the day as things wind down in life. and the fire side was great to play as i got ready for class the next morning. my only complaint was "ocean size" came on right in the middle and i was not expecting something so loud, but i still enjoy the song.
i am still listening to the cd, falling in love with some songs....i really enjoy Drowned Men, i think a song from that dude was on our mix from the summer. his voice is super!
thanks so much for a lovely cd. Russell is taking october for me, so expect one from me in november!
hey nance, thanks for the comments. I'm really glad the mix grew on you and you like it now. After hearing yours and mikeys comments i thought about it and it really is a "sleeper" mix, it takes a while to get into, but I think some of the songs on there are really nice when you give them a chance. Charlotte has told me that Drowned Men is her favorite song off the CD too, the guy is Havergal and he was on that songs of the summer mix too, he has two really good albums.
And theres nothing wrong by being surprised by Ocean Sized, it is a pretty bombastic song, I just felt like the mix needed some energy right there.
Looking forward to the october mix, though I probably wont get it until i get back from europe.

Dig the mix!
I overwhelmingly prefer water over fire for the sake of this mix. Waterbugs is the best transition song for the mix, so props on that.
i kind of agree with Mikey that upon first listen, I didn't want to put all the songs on repeat, save the few that I already knew and loved. I didn't think the mix would have lasting power upon the first listen, but after about five runs I think I appreciate it a lot more.
Thanks for kicking it off well, Jigga!
Thanks for the comments groove, its cool to hear peoples opinions like this, I also find it interesting you like the water side, I tend to prefer the fire side. Esp the Pinback and Built to spill songs.
Its definitely a bit of a different mix than what I've done in the past.
The part os "Waterbugs" where the dude wakes up and thinks he's in the morgue is hilarious to me.
I am stuck on #4... I think it's Drowned Man by Havergal. I really like it. Well, #4.
